During this season of “21 Days of Prayer”, I’d like to encourage us to praise God for WHO HE IS. Most people concentrate their praise in just a few areas, such as God’s love, and then spend the rest of their prayers asking Him for things.
Tozer in Knowledge of the Holy finds 18 characteristics of God in the Bible. (You can remember the attributes of God they are presented in this acronym: WISH TO FLOSS, JIM EGGO.)
Today I’m describing the attributes of God in the acronym, “WISH” – Wisdom, Infinitude, Sovereignty, Holiness.
Consider praising Him in your prayers today for WHO HE IS – All-wise, with no boundaries, Sovereign and Holy.
Wisdom
God makes no mistakes. He knows the best way to do everything. “Wisdom is the ability to devise perfect ends and to achieve these ends by the most perfect means.”~ Tozer. In other words, God makes no mistakes. He is the Father who truly knows best. Paul explains in Romans 11:33: “Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand His decisions and His ways!”
Scripture:
Job 12:13 ~ “To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are His.”
Psalm 111:10 ~ “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His precepts have good understanding. To Him belongs eternal praise.”
Proverbs 3:19-20 ~ “By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding He set the heavens in place; by His knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.”
Infinitude
God has no boundaries. He is without limits. He is without measure. “This attribute impacts all of the others. Since God is infinite, everything else about Him must also be infinite.” ~ Tozer
God can’t be defined or limited by size or amount. He has no beginning, no end, and no limits. We have the tendency to reduce Him in our own finite thinking, and measure by our constraints of beginning and end.
Scripture:
Job 11:7-9 ~ “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know? Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.”
Romans 11:33 ~ “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!’
Sovereignty
This is the attribute by which God rules His entire creation. It means He is all-knowing and all-powerful. He is free to do what He knows is best. He is control of everything that happens. He is even in control of the fact that He gave us free will and we are responsible for the choices we make in life.
Holiness
This is not simply our best image of perfection. God is totally untainted. His holiness is incomprehensible. This attribute sets God apart from all created beings. There is absolutely no sin or evil thought in God at all. “Wherever God appeared, such as to Moses at the burning bush, that place becomes holy just for God having been there.” ~ Tozer
Scripture:
I Peter 1:13-16 ~ “Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
God calls us to be holy. How? It’s not of our own doing, but because of His empowerment and infilling of His Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Lord, You truly have no boundaries. You are sovereign. You possess all knowledge and wisdom, and You are holy. You’ve told us to ask for wisdom. You’ve told us to be holy. I ask for Your wisdom. I ask for You to fill me with Your Holy Spirit, which empowers me to be holy. Perfect my love, dear Lord. My will is set to follow You and be all You desire me to be.
