#3 ~ Blessings on the meek! You’re going to inherit the earth.~ Matthew 5:5.
Some versions say “humble” in place of “meek”.
Psalm 149:4 says that God crowns the humble with victory. Jesus is saying in this “blessing”, that when you claim nothing as yours, everything will be given to you. Our trust can’t be in our possessions or accomplishments – pretending that we’ve done it all. We are humbly grateful when we acknowledge that all we have or all we’ve accomplished is only through HIM.
The definition of the Aramaic word for “meek” (makeekheh) is “gentle and flexible”. It’s the opposite of stubborn and rigid. The Greek word in this description of being meek is praus and is used to describe a wild horse that has been trained.
I’ve often thought of “meek” as being shy and unassuming. I thought it to mean I should shrink away from compliments and praise, so I wouldn’t become proud. But that’s not what Jesus is saying. Humility is not the same as inferiority or putting one’s self down.
Jesus is saying that being meek is being gentle, flexible, and exhibiting self-control. This looks more like submitting my will to God, knowing HE is “God” and I am not. It’s not being a doormat, but being teachable and meeting adversity without being defensive or seeking revenge.
What does this mean, to “inherit the earth”? Rather than seeking in investing in earthly “real estate”, trusting in God will lead to “real” estate in the Kingdom of God.
I’m reminded of the words to “Just to Be With You” by Paul Baloche:
“Lord, my life is an empty cup. Here’s my heart -Would You fill me up? I’m face to the ground, forsaking my pride; leaving my will, my burdens behind.
“I have come to the end of ‘me’;and there’s nothing I have to bring. But You said I belong; You say I am Yours. Nothing compares to knowing You more.
“All I want, all I need is just to be with You, just to be with You. Here I am, at Your feet, just to be with You, just to be with You.”
That is a true prayer of humility, realizing I have nothing to bring, but asking for ALL of HIM.
