Jehovah
Jehovah is an English translation of the Hebrew name, “Yahweh,” the proper name for the God of the Bible. It means “The Lord,” from “I AM.” When God told Moses to go to Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses was understandably scared. He needed to know God had his back. “Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me: What is His name? What shall I tell them?’ God said to Moses: ‘I Am Who I Am. That’s what you say. I AM has sent me.’ (Exodus 3:13-14)
Jehovah/ Yahweh is a Name of authority and power. YHWH was the tetragrammaton (no sounded vowels) of the name “Yahweh” because the Israelites felt God was too sacred and holy to say His name aloud. YHWH was more of a breath than a vocal sound. The name Yahweh is the most frequent Name for God – 6, 828 times in the Old Testament.
Jesus used many “I AM” statements to reveal Himself as God.
Scripture:
John 6:35 ~ “I Am the bread of life.”
John 10:7-11 ~ “Therefore Jesus said again, Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
John 14:6 ~ “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Here are some Jehovah/Yahweh names:
Jehovah-Jireh/Ywhweh Yireh
“The Lord will provide.” This name comes from the time Abraham found that God could be trusted to provide. In Genesis chapter 22, we read the story of Abraham, alone with his son Isaac in the wilderness. Abraham knew and trusted that God would provide a sacrifice. Abraham didn’t know HOW God would provide, but He knew God would. God did, and Abraham called that place ‘The Lord Will Provide… And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.’
Not only did God provide, He provided at just the right time! God will provide for our needs. Every one of them. He is faithful; He is able; nothing is too difficult (or too expensive) for Him. Sometimes we get our “needs” and “wants” mixed up. But God provides what’s “best” for His children. Sometimes it may feel to us that it’s the “eleventh hour”, but God provides the right amount at the right time. His math and clock don’t always coincide with ours. Just as He provided yesterday, He will provide today and tomorrow.
Scripture:
Matthew 6:28-30 ~ “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?”
Philippians 4:19 ~ “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
Jehovah Nissi/Yahweh Nissi
“The Lord is My Banner.” God proclaimed His protection, leadership, and deliverance for His people. He protected them against the Amalekites. When Moses stood on top of a hill with God’s staff in his hands and Joshua was fighting the enemy, even though Moses grew weary, others helped support his hands.
How does this apply to us? Sometimes we try to battle through hard days on our own strength. We become weary; we get upset; we get angry. God’s reminder is HE is our banner, our protector, the One who is able to lead us into supernatural victories against the obstacles.

I Corinthians 15:57 ~ “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Psalm 60:4 ~ “But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow.”
Prayer: You are the Great I AM, the only one who is perfectly self-sufficient. Thank You that I can find all that I need in You. You provide miraculously and You provide daily. Remind me of how You provided in the past. You are my Banner who sees every enemy before me. You guide me through the battles I encounter. Thank You for the ultimate victory in Jesus Christ!
