21 Days of Prayer #19 – WHO HE IS – Master and Teacher

Master

Even though He is “Master”, Jesus came to serve as “Servant.”  He taught us the way to be servants. All God’s people ought to acknowledge themselves as His servants, with God’s right to reign as Lord of their lives.

In the English Bible translations, “Master” and “Teacher” are often used interchangeably.  There’s not much difference, but “Master” emphasizes expertise, ownership, authority, and the right to expect obedience.  “Teacher” emphasizes instruction and the transfer of knowledge, whether spiritual or moral or common sense or wisdom.

In John 13;12-17, we see “Teacher” and “Master” being used:

Scripture:
John 13:12-17 ~ “When He had finished washing their feet, He put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” He asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

Prayer: Lord, You that You are not like the masters of this world who lord their power over those under them.  You show me, Jesus, what it looks like to be a gentle and meek servant leader as You washed Your disciples’ feet.

Teacher

While Jesus’ disciples most often referred to Him as “Teacher,” Jesus reveals to them that the Holy Spirit would be their teacher when He (Jesus) returned to the Father. The Holy Spirit is our teacher, guiding us into more of who God is, who He says we are, and even leading us to our next step.  What a priceless gift we have!

Scripture:
John 14;26 ~ “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

Prayer: Holy Spirit, my Teacher, what important truths would you like for me to learn today? Open my heart.  May your inspired Word be inspired to my heart.   Teach me how to apply the truths I learn from You.
