God Loves as if You’re His Only Child

Scripture:  Psalm 63:3 – “Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.”

Some Thoughts:   Anne Graham Lotz in Just Give Me Jesus, shares these thoughts about God’s love.   “No means of measure can define God’s limitless love…No farseeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of His shoreless supply…No barrier can hinder Him from pouring out His blessings… He forgives and He forgets. He creates and He cleanses. He restores and He rebuilds. He heals and He helps. He reconciles and He redeems. He comforts and He carries. He lifts and He loves. He is the God of the second chance, the fat chance, the slim chance…Just give me Jesus! He makes change possible!” – Anne Graham Lotz

We celebrate the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love when we light the Advent candles.  We know that Paul penned these words to the Corinthians: “Three things will last forever – faith, hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love.” (I Corinthians 13:13 NLT)

We love to give gifts at Christmas! I remember that even though we didn’t have much money when I was a child, my parents managed to have gifts under the tree for us. It brings tears to my eyes when I remember my mother wrapping everything! Whether it was socks, a new toothbrush, or even new underwear, it was wrapped and put under the tree! In looking back, I realize that there were not many gifts for each other (Mom and Daddy), but we kids always had something. I found myself unconsciously following that behavior with my own children, and even now with my grandchildren. I’d much rather give to them, than receive gifts for myself.  This verse shows the love of God with the gift we celebrate at Christmas: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich.” (II Corinthians 8:9 ESV)

Prayer:   When I think about Your love, all I can say is, “Thank You.” These words from “Love So High” by Chris Tomlin, Jason Ingram, Matt Redman, and Reuben Morgan are a wonderful prayer of praise:

“Your love so great, higher than the stars. Unfailing love, deeper than the sea. Your love so sure, stronger than the mountains. Oh, Your love, it’s everything to me. How deep, how wide, how long, how high…Your love.”

Thank You for loving us just as we are, but loving us so much, You aren’t willing to leave us ‘just as we are’. We can’t comprehend such lavish love that led to such a great sacrifice! Thank You.
