Scripture: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.” – Psalm 19:14
I’ve prayed that verse many days, months, years: I recently realized how important it is to constantly be in dialogue with Jesus, which leads to speaking His name – even unconsciously. It leads to the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart being acceptable – even unconsciously.
I recently had a minor surgery which involved being under anesthesia. I was just “waking up” in the recovery room and the first word out of my mouth was a prayer “Jesus”. The recovery room nurse said, “Oh, good afternoon.” Then she began to apologize for the person who was in another section of the recovery room. “I’m so sorry this is what you had to wake up to.” I realized, groggily, I was praying for this person: “Jesus, help her.” (She was yelling and arguing with the medical staff and angry that they hadn’t “fixed her”. She was using quite a few colorful words and accusations to emphasize her frustration.)
As the nurse who was assisting me kept apologizing, I just told her, “It’s okay. I’m praying for her.” She looked surprised and I said, “I’m a Christian and I’m a pastor, so I’m not horrified.” She laughed and said, “I think I should wheel you over there right now and you can lay hands on her.” (Joking, of course.)
This encounter with a person whose face I wouldn’t recognize or whose name I don’t know, has stayed with me. I have prayed for her several times since that day as she comes to mind. However, the big “aha” moment for me was ,that the first words out of my mouth were “Jesus” and an attending nurse witnessed this. This is not about me, but about Him, and about how important a moment-by-moment relationship with Him is! It’s about being aware of His Presence always. “Where can we go from His presence?” (Psalm 139)
My new version of the verse I quoted above (Psalm 19:14) is: “May the words of my mouth always speak and reflect Jesus, and the meditation of my heart be surrender to Him to fully be Lord, Rock, and Redeemer of my life. That is acceptable to Him!” – DRV (Diana Rushlow Version)
Prayer: My Prayer is the lyrics to “I Speak Jesus” by Songwriters: Jesse Reeves / Dustin Smith / Abby Benton / Kristen Dutton / Carlene Prince / Raina Pratt
“I just wanna’ speak the name of Jesus Over every heart and every mind,
‘Cause I know there is peace within Your presence – I speak Jesus.
I just wanna’ speak the name of Jesus ‘Til every dark addiction starts to break;
Declaring there is hope and there is freedom – I speak Jesus.
‘Cause Your name is power! Your name is healing! Your name is life!
Break every stronghold. Shine through the shadows. Burn like a fire.
I just wanna’ speak the name of Jesus Over fear and all anxiety.
To every soul held captive by depression, I speak Jesus.
‘Cause Your name is power! Your name is healing! Your name is life!
Break every stronghold. Shine through the shadows. Burn like a fire.
Shout Jesus from the mountains! Jesus in the streets! Jesus in the darkness, over every enemy! Jesus for my family! I speak the holy name, Jesus!
I just wanna’ speak Your Name, Jesus, Over every heart and every mind.
‘Cause I know there is peace within Your presence – I speak Jesus.” Amen.
